چکیده

We address the problem of making quantitative measurements of local flow velocities in turbulent liquid helium, using tracer particles. We survey and evaluate presently available particles and previous work to establish the need to develop new particles for the purpose. We present the first practical solution for visualizing fluid motions using a suspension of solid hydrogen particles with diameters of about 2 lm. The hydrogen particles can be used to study flows with Taylor-microscale Reynolds numbers between 85 and 775. The particles can be used equally well with the PIV, LDV, or particle-tracking techniques. Using frozen hydrogen particles to observe rotating and quantized flows in liquid helium Gregory P. Bewley 2006 We present a novel technique for tracing liquid helium flows, and use this technique to make observations of fluid dynamics in both the normal fluid and the superfluid phases of liquid helium. To visualize fluid motions, we create a suspension of frozen hydrogen particles with diamete...

On the use of helium‐filled soap bubbles for large‐scale tomographic PIV in wind tunnel experiments

tracing fidelity is controlled by the flow rates of helium, liquid soap and air in HFSB production. A characteristic time response, defined as the ratio of slip velocity and the fluid acceleration, is obtained. The feasibility of performing time-resolved tomographic PIV measurements over large volumes in aerodynamic wind tunnels is also studied. The flow past a 5-cm-diameter cylinder is measure...

Motion of micron–size particles in turbulent helium II

Abstract The surprising result of a recent experiment in turbulent helium II is that micron–size tracer particles move with about half the speed of the imposed normal fluid. We develop a theory of the interaction of small spheres with quantized vortices and predict that the particles slip velocity (resulting from the balance of buoyancy and Stokes drag forces) must be corrected by an amount whi...

Hot-wire anemometry for superfluid turbulent coflows.

We report the first evidence of an enhancement of the heat transfer from a heated wire to an external turbulent coflow of superfluid helium. We used a standard Pt-Rh hot-wire anemometer and overheat it up to 21 K in a pressurized liquid helium turbulent round jet at temperatures between 1.9 K and 2.12 K. The null-velocity response of the sensor can be satisfactorily modeled by the counterflow m...

Nonclassical velocity statistics in a turbulent atomic Bose-Einstein condensate.

In a recent experiment Paoletti [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 154501 (2008)]10.1103/PhysRevLett.101.154501 monitored the motion of tracer particles in turbulent superfluid helium and inferred that the velocity components do not obey the Gaussian statistics observed in ordinary turbulence. Motivated by their experiment, we create a small 3D turbulent state in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, compute...
